After the Wind
Avital Cnaani
2016
The catalogue After the Wind was published with Avital Cnaani’s solo exhibition at the Mishkan Museum of Art, Ein Harod in 2016. The catalogue is a monograph of the solo exhibition but also contextualizes it as part of an ongoing artistic process.
The catalogue opens with a comprehensive and thorough article by Dr. Rona Sela, the exhibition’s curator, who observes Cnaani’s work and reads it in the context of the local art field and local and global art genealogy, with reference to the feminine aspects of behavior, material and medium.
Yonatan Amir talks with Avital Cnaani in a personal and open conversation that describes in Cnaani’s words the ways she thinks and acts. The conversation challenges Cnaani’s intuitive decisions with questions concerning body disciplining, dance and concepts of scale, intuition and weight.
The images in the book reveal Cnaani’s works as moving between drawing and sculpture, referring to the movement in space as a central element in sculptural installations, to aspects of the body—living or dead, and the riotous and animalistic appearance of the lines. All of these appear in a minimalist design by Nadav Shalev.
