Nevertheless

Ester Schneider

2020

The artist book Nevertheless by Esther Schneider combines paintings from the beginning of her artistic practice up until the publication of the book in 2019. Schneider evolves from painting to the world of sculpture and installation. Her work draws from a wide range of cultural fields, including Jewish mysticism, Persian miniatures, and Russian modernism. Schneider's work navigates between connection and contradiction, exploring themes of identity, faith, and perspectives.

The book’s format resembles that of a prayer book, and by flipping through it, the experience of reading through images without text comes to life. Short texts written by the artist are found throughout the book, elaborating on fundamental motifs in her work. The paintings and the book itself refer in various ways to the decorative tradition commonly found in Jewish sacred texts, where ornaments, gates, and frames often embellish the pages. The recurring use of ink and rice paper in her paintings serves as an alternative means of writing for her.
