On Movement at this Time

Carmel Harari

2024

Documentation of a project in movement I undertook, Several Months into the War that began on October 7, 2023. I decided I could no longer retreat to my personal comfort — a retreat born out of a defensive reaction to the horrific events. Months passed, and this reality persisted for far too long.

I pushed myself out of the familiar, little by little. Traveling to different places across the country of Israel, conducting interviews with as diverse a group of people as possible, aiming to learn different perspectives on life in the broader homeland — the land of Israel, or the closer, more personal home.

This was an attempt to gain an understanding of the new reality unfolding in our lives, in a time filled with ambiguity and uncertainty. I acted on the belief that through basic physical means — movement, observation, listening, and human communication— I had the power to create an act of resistance.

Resistance to those social dictates urging us to remain in passive comfort and to merge into our identity group. Instead, I sought to learn perspectives different from my own in an effort to understand the place where we stand. This book was my graduation project in the Department of Visual Communication at Bezalel (2024), under the guidance of designer Noam Schechter.
