Reprovado

Sesper (Alexander Cruz)

2014

[Rejected]

Halfway between artist's book and an exhibition catalog, Reprovado is probably better defined as Sesper’s private journal, where he not only saves recent artworks, but also collects drafts, studies, graphic references, and material that he usually accumulates to make each piece. Printed on both sides in separable folding parts and bound solely by a malleable clip, Reprovado can be broken apart.

On one side, are color images of Sesper's works; while on the other one, black and white reproductions of research materials, drawings, sketchbooks, photographs, and visual studies that record the artist's creative process. The back images are split into three parts, forcing the reader to stretch them and regroup them in order to visualize the whole.

The unusual and innovative design was created by Julio Mariutti and Ilana Tschptschin, at Lógos studio. According to Mariutti, the idea was to create a book that also related to an assemblage piece, since Sesper currently dedicates himself to the making of large-scale paintings, collages, and assemblages, as well as developing and promoting his and other artists’ fanzines and independent publications.
