Shahar Katz

2020

Reshamim | Shahar includes a selection of plant drawings accompanied by poems about personal growth. Most of the paintings in the book were painted in the studio from observation, from plants that were harvested and collected while wandering and hiking in nature, fields, forests and orchards in the artist’s living environment in the village Kfar Sirkin, to garden plants. The paintings were formed out of the admiration of the spirit and the need to express the beauty revealed in every detail in the act of creation, the development of the ability to observe and to express it in drawing and painting, with watercolors, ink and pencils.
The poems were written over many years along life’s journey, in wanderings and walks where the feet tread, the eyes observe and the spirit wanders and finds its way back to the attentive heart, in form and words, as if by itself.

Shahar Katz is a multidisciplinary artist, born in 1969, based in Kfar Sirkin. She runs a studio dedicated to botanical painting and ceramics, focusing primarily on botanical watercolor and porcelain work, while exploring the connections between these two practices.

Her work centers on close observation of nature and material processes, integrating creation, research, and teaching. Katz is also a writer, incorporating text as an integral part of her artistic practice – including poetry, documentation of her work, and visual research.

Her book Reshamim is a personal project combining botanical drawings and original poems, developed through years of observation, drawing, writing, and weaving together nature, material, and language.
First self-published in 2020, the book has since been released in limited, curated editions – now in its fourth edition
