Sheldon Schonberg (1926–2012) was an American Jewish painter, and at times also an Israeli one. He studied art in the United States and specialized in fresco painting in Italy and Mexico. Schonberg recognized the historical significance of his time and the meanings of national-political revival and Jewish-Israeli awakening, and immigrated to Palestine shortly before the declaration of independence.
He lived and worked in Israel during three periods between 1948 and 1956, during which he exhibited his work, created mural paintings in public buildings, taught the art of mural painting, maintained ties with the local cultural field, and even had an important painting acquired for the Knesset collection (its whereabouts have since been lost). These were formative years for his artistic consciousness—its themes and its style—years in which the personal and artistic trajectory of Schonberg’s life intersected with the path of the Jewish people at a historical crossroads.
This book presents, for the first time, the chapter of Sheldon Schonberg’s life and work in Israel.

Ron Bartos is an art historian and independent curator, specializing in Israeli art. He holds bachelor and master’s degrees in art history from Tel Aviv University, and graduated from Tel Aviv’s Alma College’s fellowship program. Bartos has published numerous books and catalogues about Israeli art history and Israeli artists and has curated solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums.
