The Beauty Catalog
Irit Barel Bassan
2018
This book was a part of my solo-show "The Long Tail of Man" which was exhibited at P8 Gallery in 2018. At the center of the exhibition lay the assumption that it is possible to separate between something’s appearance and the thing itself.
When the two are separated, arises the question of whether the outward manifestation can indicate the essence. And in the particular case of human beauty, why does man strive to be in an ideal state of beauty, competence, and power? And whether it is an uncontrollable evolutionary impulse.
The book describes a conversation between a doctor and a potential patient—a young man who wants to improve his body. The story depicts only the doctor's explanation so the dialogue is presented as a monologue. The book is set in the future, where body-shaping technology is more advanced than what exists in the field today. Subsequently, it stretches the limits of absurdity regarding the appearance of human beauty.
