The Book of Tom
Ada Vardi & Marit Ben Israel
2022
Edited by Marit Benisrael and Ada Wardi
A journey following the work of the illustrator Tom Seidmann-Freud (1892-1930), whose groundbreaking work left its mark on German and Hebrew children's literature, formulated new rules for the relationship between text and illustration, brought distant worlds closer and broke the conventions of textbooks in favor of imagination, play, story and puzzle.
Her untimely death abruptly ended the momentum of her work. A few years later, her library was confiscated and destroyed by the Nazis, with the exception of rare copies kept by libraries and collectors.
This book - the first dedicated to her creation - is not only an attempt to document and illuminate what was lost, but also a contemporary proposal to go through the many doors she opened.
