White Ink

Orly Maiberg

2015

Every working day at the studio starts with a drawing session in watercolor and ink on paper; with full devotion and almost a compulsive need, I find that this daily practice resonates with my mental state.
Unlike working on big canvases, the paper’s small format produces a close and intimate relationship with the movement of the hands, as if it was a seismograph.
With nothing in my mind, and with no preconceived ideas, as if to imitate the yoga practice, I concentrate only in the actions: drawing in lines and stains. I minimize the objects of drawing to a body in reversed poses, leaning forward, with legs up or arms outstretched. I repeat and draw these poses over and over until the ink flows on the paper independently. The drawing session turns meditative.
With time the figurative image undergoes a process of abstraction. The body has no grip on the ground and remains vulnerable. It seems floating or drowning while losing its specific gravity.
