YAAD/MIAAR

Rutie Stern

2023

Hand-written letters in black appear over blank papers, joining together to form words and sentences that are read breathlessly, mimicking the condensed atmosphere of living in Israel.

The author, Rutie Stern, was raised in a small settlement in Galilee. Built on the ruins of the Arabic village Miaar, the village was demolished during the 1948 Nakba.

In her book, she closely examines her identity as an Israeli-Jew, in relation to these historical narratives. She writes down her thoughts and feelings about this seemingly impossible reality.
This book was created for an art exhibition named (The Sky is the Same Sky) that took place in 2018, dealing with the memory of the Nakba through the lens of the Jewish population.
