War Drawings

On the eve of Memorial Day this year, three books were brought together: three war diaries, published decades apart, capturing the scenes of the battlefront in swift, freehand lines. Nahum Gutman gathered drawings from the 1948 war into a book published by the Ministry of Defense and presented to bereaved families as a Memorial Day gift in 1961. David Tartakover compiled his drawings from the Yom Kippur War, with words added by his platoon companion, Eli Mohar. And Gad Ulman, also a soldier in October 1973, writes and draws—moving between deep pain and dark humor.
