Israel, The Twentry-first Century

Alex Levac

2008

Nearly all of the photographs in this book were published, one per week, in Haaretz newspaper between 2000 and 2007.
The removal of these photographs from the context of the newspaper and the assembling of them adjacent to one another endow them with quite a different character and essence: from a small public park in the heart of the metropolis, they become the metropolis; from a sharp and brilliant footnote on 'the situation', they become in their assembly together 'the situation' itself.
Something else is evident to the eye. Immediately upon leafing through these photographs, we allow this accumulation, which is not only quantitative but also qualitative, to seep in: the sequence of Levac’s images about 'the situation' in those years is immeasurably more disturbing and chilling than its predecessor, Our Country, which was published in 2000.
