Like Light on the Eye which has Adjusted to Darkness

Eti (Etika) Yaffe

2019

This one-off hand-made artist's book comprises various transparent papers, plexiglas, photography, and printing.

It corresponds with the concept of “The New Vision”, and examines the relations between the layers of paper and the image, transparency and opacity, fullness and emptiness, resisting interpretation. The title of the book is a quote by the poet Eli Eliahu.

The book was presented first at the exhibition "Mechalim", a group show organized by "Craft Israel", curated by Yuval Etzioni, at the BY/5 gallery, Tel Aviv.

Born in Tel Aviv, 1957, Resident of Kfar Saba.

A multidisciplinary artist, photographer, poet, expert in Israeli photography, visual culture researcher, and curator. Her artistic work engages with themes of womanhood, the body, impermanence, feminine traditions, memory, childhood landscapes, and the cultural heritage from which she emerges—both Eastern and Western.

Her work incorporates photographic processes and mixed media techniques, often distancing the image from its original form through defamiliarization, digital printing on paper or fabric, enlargement, and recontextualization. She creates installations as an integral part of her artistic practice. Her series are often presented in light boxes, featuring moving images and visual narratives. She also produces artist books and video works, some of which incorporate her own voice.

Co-founder of “Mentshele” – an open house for art, culture, and community, established with her husband Shlomo in memory of his twin brother Yaakov, who was killed during a military operation in the Shaked Reconnaissance Unit in 1977.

For approximately 30 years, she was active in art education, developing interdisciplinary curricula that integrated visual arts and photography, tailored to diverse student populations, including gifted students, special education, and mainstream education. She also trained educators within the national education system. She taught at the Art Teachers’ College at Beit Berl and served as a guest lecturer at Tel Aviv University and Seminar Hakibbutzim.
