Phantom

Connections between inwards and outwards, between the physical and mental, between the concrete and metaphoric, between the private and collective – are at the center of this book.

Illustrated, wordless, "Phantom" unfolds a relationship between a girl and a demon that suddenly emerges from a hole gaping in her home – and in her life.

Doing away with words allows the format to take center stage, and the reader to examine the interplay between the illustrations and the structure of the book, and the way they affect its meaning.

The book is more than a mere container. The format, and the way it is leafed through, serve as visual instruments – dictating its rhythm, alternately disrupting and refining feelings and atmosphere.

The wordless story also makes for personal expression, which abstracts from the concrete, takes on archetypes and metaphors and is rendered public. The book enables broad interpretation and appropriation, offering the reader a source of identification – and consolation.
