Sleepers

Naomi Leshem

2011

The book presents the "Sleepers" series which includes 32 images of teenagers while they are sleeping in their rooms. Leshem photographed the teenage boys and girls, who range in age from 16 to 20, in Israel, Germany, Switzerland, France and the United States. The book includes texts written for the series by writers and poets from Israel and abroad. The German poet Ole Hahn, the Serbian/Canadian writer David Albahari, the Swiss writer Ors Fass, and Israeli writers Eran Tzur, Eshkol Nevo and Reuven Kuperman. The images conceptually and visually explore the theme of sleep, which religions, cultures and the world of art deal with, and the unique portraiture that results from the act of photography while the photographed subject is unaware of the moment of photography.
