Runways

Naomi Leshem

2009

The book presents three series, video stills from video work and texts. The series 'Way to beyond' deals with places of separation and death. Breathtaking landscape photographs that preserve within them stories of loss and disappearances. In the "Runways" series, the runways at Israeli military airports are photographed. Pre-draft girls stand or step on them with bare feet, creating a connection between the present and the future, the innocence of youth and the impending entry into the military service, identity versus anonymity. The series "Lisette" was photographed from the same spot for fourteen months and followed the changes that took place in a certain point where nature, a cemetery, a neighborhood under construction, landscape and weather conditions were visible. The series explores what happens simultaneously in aspects of nature, life and death. 'Phantom' is a video work created by editing a film taken by an underwater robot while searching for a Phantom plane and its crew that crashed in the Sea of Galilee. As in a chilling horror movie, images are revealed to the viewer as he accompanies the search through the clear water that sometimes becomes cloudy. In the book, still images are selected from the video work that form a series in itself.
