Bezalel Ben‑Chaim

2020

This book documents a body of work which is based on a very simple action: I take long exposure photographs of the sun, ranging in length between one hour to a full day, using medium-format film cameras, and an extremely opaque ND filter. The camera is static, set on a tripod for the length of the exposure, during which time the earth rotates and moves slightly in relation to the sun. The resulting image shows this relative movement of the sun as a light streak across the sky—the length of the streak is determined by the length of the exposure. The images show the sun in motion, and all other elements remain static.
My motivation in these photographs is to capture time. Actually grab it in my hand and not let go. Not a second or a split second, but hours, days, to keep them from disappearing.

Bezalel Ben-Chaim was born in Be’er Sheva, and lives and works in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. He holds a BDes from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, and an MFA from Hamidrasha School of Art, at Beit Berl College. By way of still photography, video works and printmaking, Ben-Chaim explores time and the disintegration and stretching of borders of the medium and reality. In 2021, he staged a solo exhibition at Binyamin Gallery in Tel Aviv.
