Downtown Athletic Club

Tal Granot

2012

Artist’s book inspired by text I found in the book Delirious New York (1978), by Rem Koolhass, which describes the building of Manhattan’s skyscrapers in the early years of the 20th century.
The Downtown Athletic Club was a private social athletic club for men only. Inside there were sports and beauty facilities which embodied the ideal New Yorker’s male passion: to be educated, social, strong and sexually liberated. The club was situated in its own skyscraper at the heart of Manhattan.
The structure and the men who visited the club were technically architecturally and culturally enclosed. Since there was no documentation of the building I decided to create one. The book functions as an architectural object: it gives the readers an option to wander around the floors and to read it randomly.
