LEGEND

Tamar Lev‑On

2019

Through the stories of 40 fictional characters, a local parable is constructed. LEGEND is an exhibition between pages of a book, offering a new reading experience: the reader is invited to get to know the characters in the order he chooses, skipping between biographies, works of art and short stories.

LEGEND is a fake historical fabric, an alternative to the life in Israel between the modern and the postmodern. It contains fictional biographies, intertwined with each other in a critical, sometimes gloomy, and at times humorous approach. The characters and their lives are immortalized in a creative stream of consciousness: collage, altered photographs, drawings and paintings, and objects and “evidence” related to their life stories. The book includes the 40 biographies, intertwined and interrelated, and 30 works of art—a visual subconscious of the plot, exploring intimate relationships as they are reflected in the characters. In addition, the book contains 20 short stories by guest writers, which were inspired by the characters that make up the project.

The LEGEND project is another link in Lev-On’s practice, which discusses the meaning of a work that is delivered as a “true story” and thus deceives the audience. The book is constructed as an archive, visually and conceptually. It appears at times like an old encyclopedia, a botanical guidebook, or a magazine, interrupted by images or blends into them, hosting pages full of stories.
