Flora, Fauna and The Fantastic
Geffen Refaeli
2022
An imaginary lexicon of local beings—crossbreeds of plants, animals, microorganisms and minerals. The book offers an absurd, poetic, pseudo-scientific journey to discover the lives of the seen and unseen beings around us. The project’s materials have been collected and assembled from out-of-print botanical guides, zoology books and natural world encyclopedias.
The lexicon draws from the world of Western knowledge systems which tend to classify living beings in hierarchical models, as it aims to challenge the perception of these models as objective and hermetic, and allude to their political nature.
The new imaginary story, in which organisms that are considered radically different are merged, blurs the distinctions between plants and animals, human and non-human, general and particular and truth and imagination.
