Neighborhood

Yehoshua (Shuka) Glotman

1980

The book consists of photographs I took in London, England, and deals with processes urban decay, the city center as an organic entity, blooming and withering, sinking and regenerating. It was shot in an area called East Center 1, a partly abandoned rural-like area with complex architecture. I met Roma children there for the first time in my life. I presented a solo exhibition in the gallery in the middle of the neighborhood based on the photographs in the book. I organized events in the gallery for the residents; among other things, there was someone who gave a lecture on the history of the neighborhood, a photography workshop for children using a Polaroid camera and a musical evening. It was at the end of the Labour Party’s rule, just before Margaret Thatcher came to power. The photographs from the book were purchased for the archives of the City of London Museum.
