Paper and Scissors
Hila Laviv
2021
A bilingual and bi-directional artist book in an edition of 50 signed and cut copies.
Paper and Scissors is the third chapter from a handwork book for children written by my grandmother’s mother, Anna Warburg. The book was first published in Sweden in 1917, and translated into English in 1938. My grandmother Noni gave it to me, along with a handwritten travel diary that was written in 1934. I recently became their memories keeper. I want to translate and leave the source. It is difficult to read this translation but my intention is not to obscure something clear, but to clarify a little what is obscure. This is a book that can be cut out, it can have holes in it. My grandmother cuts books, if she needs to.
