Pending View

Orly Maiberg

2017

If one were to translate Pending View literally from the Hebrew, it carries a double meaning—hanging in the landscape, and depending on the landscape. This suggests somewhat the essence of Pending View, which points to a state of suspense the figures are in, and simultaneously implies the vista in which they are situated.
The book accompanied the exhibition, a painting installation that was hung from the ceiling, independent of the gallery walls. The floating nature also characterizes the painted figures that emerge from their abstract surroundings. No clear horizon line is indicated, no separation between earth and sky. The circular structure of the hung paintings offered the viewer a walk-in experience that situates them in the midst of the imaginary views.
The viewer can be the wanderer above the sea or the tightrope walker searching for balance. Either way, facing nature’s grandeur, they find themselves standing on shaky ground.
