Judith Margolis

A found and altered book

The pages of an old volume of essays by Addison and Steele, (published 1874) each page with a rectangular textblock, are painted, collaged, and sewn with silk threads and glass beads.

Making a stream-of-consciousness narrative. The applied collage and paint allow some fragments of the original text to show through, juxtaposing the hundred-year-old text with contemporary cultural references. Each page also functions as an individual small-scale abstract work of art.

The book was exhibited internationally for ten years until the disintegration of the fragile antique book presented a lesson in vulnerability and aging, and was retired from being handled. I never finished altering all the pages.
