Lika a Dog

2005

"The idea for the book came about while going through my messy archives. One of the benefits of a messy archive is that you go through it on a monthly basis. Many dogs found their way into the photos I’ve taken over the years. I decided to complete the collection with self-initiated photos. I’ve been to dog shows, dog salons, veterinarians, breeders, trainers, I’ve traveled all over the country; I even had a professional researcher. I was looking for interesting photographs and it took a while (the publisher even called wanting to know how things were progressing). Then, just as it was really done, more precisely when it was time to close up shop, that is, no next frame, no more discussion, no more deliberation, and we were done (although as far as I’m concerned, nothing is actually ever done), I ran into a neighbor coming down the stairs of our apartment building on Frishman Street, with his little dog Fifi. Fifi was wearing a red dress and had two braids with a purple butterfly-shaped hairpin stuck in her hair. Okay, I said, you’re in too. But you’re definitely the last."
